    In 1997, the government pledged to double the tax cost of a company car to employees over and above inflation in five years. This they have achieved. Karl Vernum, a consultant with Chiltern Plc, specialising in corporate PAYE/NIC, outlines the options available now The provision of the company car as a perk harks back to the early 1970s when wage rises were limited by statute and company cars were seen as a way of increasing the salary package since cars were outside the wage legislation.
