It’s strange how often one picks up useful information in the most unlikely places. Take the 2008 Collins Stewart London Boat Show at ExCeL, says Peter Poland. There I was – standing in a muddy field on January 19, blasting holes in the sky behind fast flying pheasants (instead of fighting my way round the LBS for a third day)...

I don’t want to spoil the party, but I fear that an analysis of actual boat sales at both of the London and Düsseldorf shows will reveal that global economic events, and the spectre of recession, has caused many serious customers to postpone purchases, citing uncertainty as to how these emerging events will impact on them.

CEASED TRADING: Shared ownership company Challenger Syndicateship Ltd ceased trading on Wednesday January 2. Attempts to contact the company since have failed, with voicemail on the company’s landline and a simple message on Rimmer’s mobile saying he is unavailable.
