BMF encourages youngsters into industry

In a move designed to encourage more young people into the industry and help solve the skills shortage, the British Marine Federation (BMF) ran a careers event in November.

Held in Lymington on November 7 and hosted by the Berthon Boat Company at its marina and boatyard, the event started with a tour of the boatyard and facilities at Berthon, providing an ideal opportunity for young people to see first hand what is involved in boat building.

Following the tour, delegates were given the opportunity to discuss career opportunities with the representative companies and find out more about qualifications and modern apprenticeships on offer.

"The skills shortage is an ongoing concern in the marine sector and there are a number of initiatives being adopted to address the problem, " said Sarah Dhanda, BMF director of training. "Such projects provide an invaluable insight into the marine industry for young people who might be interested in a career in the industry."

Representing the industry were 10 companies including Berthon Boat Company, Green Marine, Sea Ventures, Royal Yachting Association, National Federation of Sea Schools, ITE Corporate Training & Recruitment, Harken UK, Lymington Yacht Haven, Berthon Boat Company and the BMF.
