Macerator avoids impeller damage

Many more boats are being fitted with holding tanks that use an in-line flexible impeller macerator pump to break down what are euphemistically termed "soft solids".

But Jabsco's engineers say they have come up with a technical breakthrough that helps avoid impeller damage, which can be caused by letting the pump run dry after the tank is empty.

Jabsco's new Run-Dry Macerator Pump has a built-in electronic run-dry protection device, for which a patent is pending.

The device detects the absence of fluids and shuts off the pump before any damage can occur.

In addition, intelligent electronics allow the pump to run dry for long enough to selfprime and will also shut down the pump if the overall running time exceeds the duty rating of approximately 15 minutes.

Turning the pump off, and then on again, will reset the protection device.

The pump can be mounted as much as 4ft above the bottom of the holding tank and has a maximum flow rate of 10 gallons per minute.

It can empty a typical 25 gallon holding tank in less than three minutes, while a 130 gallon tank can be completely discharged in one 15 minute operation.

Jabsco's Run-Dry Macerator is available in 12 or 24 volt models, both of which comply with US and European ignition protection regulations.
