Communities to play part in Grantham Canal project

British Waterways says that following disappointment at the failure of a bid for lottery funding to restore the Grantham Canal canal in the late 1990s, a completely new approach has been devised by the Waterway Management team.

A strong partnership of British Waterways, the local authorities, voluntary groups and other interested organisations has been working for some time to devise a realisable approach to the canal's regeneration, which has at its heart action along the wider canal corridor, and, the full active support of the local communities and all those that share a passion for the ecological, recreational and cultural opportunities such a project presents. Whilst at the same time undertaking a programme of works to maintain and develop the canal and its environs as increasingly cherished amenity and environmental resource for both local people and visitors.

The Strategy aims to: ensure that a sustainable and strategic approach is taken to the management and regeneration of the canal and its corridor in the short, medium and long term; provide an agreed vision as a basis for a Grantham Canal partnership; provide a framework for investment in the canal corridor; and facilitate the engagement and support of local authorities, other agencies, local communities, organisations and individuals with an interest in the canal.
