Planning permission sought for new moorings
01 Mar 2002
The moorings will be permanent but not residential.
The plans include the creation of a new winding hole for full length boats visiting the Wendover Arm as well facilities for moorers including:
water; electricity; sanitary disposal; waste collection; a jetty with a secure access gate; a crushed stone surfaced car park for up to 10 cars and a new access track. To create the mooring layby, the channel would be widened on the offside of the canal, the footpath diverted and hedge replanted.
Matthew Routledge, British Waterways' waterway manager said: "Our plans for a small mooring area alongside the Wendover Arm are designed to complement the rural setting and include measures to improve the waterway environment, such as soft bank protection and reed planting to provide habitats for wildlife like frogs, butterflies and fish. We'd like more boats to be able to navigate this beautiful rural waterway, which the Wendover Arm Trust, with our support, is working to fully restore."
British Waterways has submitted its proposals as prospective purchasers of the land alongside the Wendover Arm where the Tring Canal Festival is held, raising money for the Wendover Arm Trust.
"We are looking to buy the land to secure the site for future Tring Canal Festivals which raise funds for the restoration of the Wendover Arm, " continued Routledge. "By creating moorings here we can provide better facilities for visitors to the festival as well as the long-term moorers, and generate income in return for our investment in the land."
