Bilge filters "remove 99.9% of hydrocarbons"
01 Oct 2002
Described as a "bilge water polishing system", Centek says it has proved itself on everything from large cruise ships and commercial vessels to family pleasure boats.
BilgeKleen utilises Mycelx Hydrocarbon Removal Matrix (HRM) cartridges. Centek says they remove 99.9% of hydrocarbons, including sheen from gasoline and diesel fuel, in a single pass (less than 1 ppb) without increasing back pressure on the bilge pumps, even when the filter is fully saturated.
And they say Mycelx systems are the only products available that can support this claim.
The company says it has confirmed the product's effectiveness through independent testing. Verified by a differential pressure gauge, competitive filter "W", when run to saturation, reached over 10 psi back pressure, while the Mycelx filter exhibited less than 1 psi of back pressure.
The "W" filter's back pressure could stop the flow of water completely in the bilge system, overstressing the bilge pump to a dangerous point, says Centek.
In addition, breakthrough of oil in the "W" filter occurred after only 10 ml of crankcase oil passed through it. The Mycelx cartridge needed to pass 150 ml of oil before breakthrough.
When de-ionised water was processed through new filters, the Mycelx filter exhibited a clear effluent, while the "W" filter emitted a brownish liquid, says the company.
Volatile analysis of the "W" filter effluent showed acetone, highly poisonous carbon disulfide, hexanol, benzene and ethyl hexanol.
Centek says BilgeKleen exceeds all ICCL, Coast Guard, IMO and Lloyd's discharge standards. It's also approved by the State of California Department of Fish and Game and the United States EPA for oil spill prevention.
Centek/Mycelx products are hydrophobic and bind hydrocarbons, benzene, PCBs and other byproducts instantly and permanently, while allowing water to flow easily through the system.
