Horse Sand Fort for sale

The last of the famous sea forts guarding Portsmouth Harbour that is not privately owned, has been placed on the market by the Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust.

The fort is being offered by sole agents Vail Williams at a guide price of £250,000.

No Man's Land Fort and Spit Bank Fort were sold some years ago. No Man's Land is now a sumptuous private residence, while Spit Bank Fort is currently a major tourist attraction.

The fourth fort, St Helen's off Bembridge, is owned by the Isle of Wight Council but presently stands derelict.

Built between 1861 and 1880 to defend Portsmouth, the forts were known as "Palmerston's Follies".

Horse Sand Fort is 240 ft in diameter with granite block walls 15ft thick. The estate agent feels justified in emphasising the "unrestricted sea views"?
