MP launches schools project

Industry minister Alan Johnson MP launched the Schools Marine Challenge, a programme that links schools with a local company to design, build and ultimately race motor boats.

The initiative aims to introduce school children and staff to the thriving marine sector and to boost the curriculum by encouraging a meaningful interest in design and technology, including sustainable technology as some of the boats will be solar powered.

Fairline chose the Tower of London last month as the setting for the launch of the new Squadron 74 - seen here cruising through Tower Bridge - and the celebration of the company's 10,000th boat.

The company, started 35 years ago, is still based in Oundle, and now exports 90% of its output. Chairman Derek Carter said Europe is still performing exceedingly well for the company, with the USA as the second strongest market, while Australasia is the fastest growing.
