Blyth helps Channel 4 Fake It
01 Jan 2003
The programme takes people out of their normal working or sporting sphere and, with one month's training, pits them against people accomplished in the selected task.
The Challenge Business programme - shown on December 11 - took 29 year-old Weymouth ferry stewardess, Lucy Craig, and gave her to Blyth and his team of Tracy Edwards and Emma Richards for her training.
Surprisingly, Emma Richards - Ms Craig's main training mentor - soon disappeared to the USA to sort out her sponsor, leaving Craig complaining of feeling a bit overwhelmed and unhappy.
But, after some hands-on training from Blyth, the girl done good. In a 5-boat race in 72ft Global Challenge Race yachts, with the Challenge Business' skippers handling the other boats, Craig beat them all.
After a not very good start, she put in a tack to clear her air and picked up a shift that put her into a lead that she never lost. Wonderful!
Then, in an interview with the panel of judges, she managed to convince them she had been sailing throughout her life.
When told one of the skippers had only started sailing one month before the race, the judges were asked which skipper they thought was the novice. Only one of the three judges named Craig.
"We were delighted when we were approached by the Faking It team, " said Blyth.
"The ethos of Faking It runs in parallel with our own - that anything is possible and sailing can be enjoyed by anyone."
"This was the most incredible experience of my life, " said Craig.
"You really can do anything you want if you put your mind to it and my trainers were always there to back me 100% of the way, even if I was nervous about doing something, including climbing the 95ft mast."
Craig now has her sights set on continuing her sailing career and possibly doing a season in the Caribbean.
