National Boat Shows has done it again. Following hard on the heels of the extra late night opening at next January's London International Boat Show, it now wants to take the Marine Trade Show to Docklands.

Paul Streeter, NBS managing director, sent a letter out to exhibitors that - essentially - said we've decided to go to ExCeL. You can tell me what you like, but we're going.

What's more, the rumour quickly spread that the show was being moved this year.

Streeter accepts he has written better letters. What he meant to say was that the Marine Trade Show has to move from its current Windsor venue because it costs too much to stage, the dates can never be relied on and the show has grown so much it has reached its maximum limit at the Windsor venue.

These are all good reasons to move the show.

But is it really necessary to rush this through in three months? And is ExCeL the right place for the Marine Trade Show?

National Boat Shows says it wants to grow the Marine Trade Show.

But growing the show means getting more visitors in.

That means having a venue that's attractive to the majority of visitors.

Windsor is an hour's run from the south coast. Two hours wandering round the show and insulting competitors and you're back in the shop right after lunch.

It's another 60 miles round the M25 from the top of the M3 to ExCeL.

I live 40 miles from ExCeL, most of it on the M25. It takes me an hour.

So those 60 miles (plus the odd diversion around Canary Wharf) will add at least another 1 1/2 hours.

If the M25 is having a bad day, that could double.

Will anyone from Poole want to spend around six hours travelling for a couple of hours at the show?

I spoke to a few Windsor visitors who said they would make the trip. But I suspect there are many who will not.

And that could spell the end of the Marine Trade Show.
