Helston wins Schools Marine Challenge

Helston School and Community College won the Schools Marine Challenge after an exciting final race on Roadford Lake, near Okehampton last month.

The race saw the culmination of the challenge, which was organised by Marine Southwest and supported by the British Marine Federation and South West Regional Development Agency.

Ten schools competed to design, build and race model powerboats with a little help from their friends.

Staff from Falmouth Marine School helped design the winning boat, with technical support and sponsorship coming from Nimrif Models in Plymouth.

The stepped hull was powered by an Ervine 25, 4.2cc petrol unit mated to a surface drive.

The boat was, by all accounts, a flyer - quite literally taking off at times and proving difficult to control around a tight course.

The Helston team was also helped by the engineering department at RNAS Culdrose, which provided a valuable insight into composite technology used in the design and manufacture of helicopters.

The team is now looking for technical support and sponsorship to build the new boat for next year's competition.

Interested companies should call Paul Finlay, head of design and technology, at Helston School on 01326 572685.
