SureSeal better than stuffing box, says Tides Marine

Boat owners who use stuffing boxes instead of high-quality shaft seals have to tolerate water in the bilge, says Tides Marine.

And now, Tides Marine has launched its new SureSeal System, which they say provides numerous design and performance enhancements.

The SureSeal housing is made from a new, fibrereinforced composite material that they say is stronger, more compact and more durable than its predecessor.

Its dimensions are not affected by temperature changes, and the SureSeal will not absorb water.

Its integral PTFE bearing extends the operating life of the seal under normal operating conditions. If the unit's water injection system fails to provide cooling water to the lip seal, the PTFE bearing and fibre-reinforced housing will not be affected.

Tides' new articulating hose makes connection of the SureSeal to the stern tube easier, they say. The design of the hose positions the unit so that the required operating clearance is achieved without measurement. This new hose also reduces side loads to the SureSeal should misalignment occur.

Hose clamps from Tides Marine also have an improved design that won't mar or tear the hose surface. The clamps require less force to tighten and they adjust to small changes in hose diameter caused by temperature and pressure fluctuations.

The new SureSeal incorporates a removable front cap, allowing access to the lip seal and making it easier to remove and replace the seal in tight quarters. SureSeal units are guaranteed for 2,500 engine hours or two years.
