Trade could lose out on Boatmark

George Skinner, project manager for Boatmark, says the trade could lose out on Boatmark profits if non-marine companies pick up sales.

"We 've been getting enquiries from security companies outside the marine trade, " Skinner told BB . "They can obviously see the potential and while they are talking to people about security on their houses, if they find out they've got a boat they are going to snap up the sale."

Although the margins on Boatmark are not huge - Skinner says it's £10 per unit - for a company selling 300 or 400 boats a year, "that's an extra 3,000 or 4,000 on the bottom line for doing not a lot".

Skinner says there's nothing to stop security companies signing up for Boatmark. "We 've been holding back to keep it in the marine trade, but if the trade isn't going to push it, there's a lot of money that will go outside the trade, " he said.

Skinner reckons the market is enormous. "There are around 2,000,000 boats in the UK. At a tenner each, that's a £20m profit to be made."
