Big increase in Thames boaters
01 Mar 2003
The number of boaters using the Thames rose sharply in 2002 by a huge 900, says the Environment Agency (EA) In 2002, 26,839 vessels were registered on the river. This significant rise, between 2001 and 2002, followed the Agency's spring/summer 2002 licence enforcement campaign.
The river has also seen a marked increase in 'boat traffic', with 4.6% more vessels moving along the Thames in 2002, compared to 2001.
Eileen McKeever, Thames Waterway manager, said: "These figures are excellent news and proof that boaters are once again returning to the river.
They also show the impact of the Agency's investment in marketing and advertising.
The agency says visiting boaters are making the most of the new flexible licences on the Thames.
