Concept Boat shortlist announced
01 Oct 2003
The winner will be one of the 23 designs that included a twin hulled sailboard, a vessel that encourages oceanographic research and shallow water exploration, a sport boat that converts from a high speed boat into a submarine for two divers, a search and rescue craft designed to handle shallow river entrances and the most adverse sea conditions, a towed submersible vessel for tourist and recreational use and a modern steamship for use on inland waterways, designed to carry 60 passengers as a ferry or a party vessel.
Tom Nighy, one of the competition's judges, said: "The high quality and wide variety of the designs made judging this year's competition particularly difficult."
BB understands there was also a design submitted for a "love boat" that had all manner of grab handles in strange places. The British Marine Federation (BMF) failed to provide us with a picture of the design.
The theme for Concept Boat 2004 - which will be sponsored by the Environment Agency - is the environment.
The BMF says the judges will be looking for recreational or commercial craft up to 24m in length that either make increased use of renewable resources, are energy and resource efficient, are of low emission or non-polluting design or that minimise the effect of boating on the marine environment.
