Success for first FMC Rally

Twenty nine historic working narrowboats and 3,000 enthusiastic spectators rallied at Braunston Marina for the weekend June 28-29 for what the organisers says was perhaps the first ever FMC Rally.

The Fellows, Morton and Clayton event was held to celebrate the re-restoration of the last surviving steam narrowboat President .Braunston Marina - which helped sponsor the rerestoration - was once an FMC depot which, 80 years ago, was the scene of the famous 1923 FMC boatmen's strike.

The Rally was formally opened by Casualty star Zita Sattar - great-great grand daughter of the first President captain James Woodfield.

Tim Coghlan, md of Braunston Marina, said: "The success of this FMC Rally has inspired us to hold an annual historic narrowboat rally at Braunston Marina in the last weekend in June."

He emphasised this would not mean bringing back the Braunston Boat Show: "just the bit that doesn't click at Crick".

Next year's Rally is set for June 26 and 27.
