Portsmouth POLL
01 Oct 2003
Poll sees that one of the nominations the 23m to 36m superyacht awards category is none other than the Ron Holland designed, Pendennis-built, Boo Too . What a pity the boat's owner, one Oliver Vaughan , wasn't able to make the nominations for Businessman of the Year, following his purchase of the Action Leisure chandleries, swiftly followed by closure of same, with the usual sorry stories of loss of jobs and money.
Saltwater Communications held its annual media party at the Southampton Boat Show, presenting various awards to unsuspecting journalists. The party was livened up by the appearance of Clare and Keziah , attractively dressed as cowgirls in pink leather hotpants over white leather chaps. The pair dispensed quantities of Tequila to anyone within reach. Mainly men, for some reason.
With an eye to the requirements of the ladies present, Poll was pleased to see the always even-handed hosts had laid on two beautiful young men to raise the female temperatures. But Poll thought her readers might prefer to see the girls, though. As the end of the presentations approached, that nice Mr Nash wondered why he hadn't received an award. He was not to be left out, however, and the elegant, leggy, Mrs Bartlett gave him one. He is seen here with Mrs Bartlett, grasping his award, presented for wearing a hairshirt.
While browsing around the local chemist shop recently - as one does - Poll noticed a display of incontinence apparel . Of the two brand names on offer, Poll was amused to see one was the Kylie range of incontinence pants. A thought to conjure with??. .
It will be a sad day when Concorde is grounded, says Poll. That nice MrNash , the editor, told Poll how he was travelling to METS when the beautiful aircraft made her return to the skies following the Air France debacle. As Mr Nash's aircraft taxied out, the Captain told the passengers that Concorde was three ahead in the queue and that those on the port side would get grandstand seats to see her as she lined up for take off. Mr Nash reports that an overawed fellow passenger tore himself away from the spectacle of Concorde sitting 100 yards away on the threshold, turned to him and said: "It feels like being on the 1st tee with Tiger Woods ."
On the subject of golf, the recent North Sails golf day in aid of the John Merricks Sailing Trust raised over £11,000. In the five years since the trust was set up following the tragic death of 470 silver medallist John Merricks, the JMST has raised more than £200,000. The funds go to help sailors under 25, not necessarily in racing. Some 28 grants have already been made and some 20 boats have been bought for clubs and schools.
Seen at Southampton . The exhibitor is a Belgian, so perhaps something got lost in the translation.
Even Poll was speechless.
