The minister made the announcement during a visit to Muirtown Lock on the Caledonian Canal in Inverness to see the progress being made on a £20 million project to secure its future.

"In recent years, we have reversed decades of neglect and revitalised Scotland's canals, " said Stephen, adding the Falkirk Wheel and the restoration of the Caledonian to improve access to the Lowland and Highland canals and will include improvements to towpaths, access roads and slipways, over 1km of additional moorings and the provision of moorings and boaters' facilities at Auchinstarry as a first stage in the creation of a new marina.

"In the last few years Scotland's inland waterways have undergone a physical transformation and taken on a new lease of life, " said Jim Stirling, BW director Scotland.

"It is now absolutely critical that we build on this activity and continue working with all our partners to transform our canals into a thriving leisure resource for the people of Scotland."
