New marine cluster group in Cowes

The Cowes Cluster has been formed by a collection of local marine trade businesses, including boatbuilders, marine equipment suppliers, fitters and others, writes Iain Sutherland.

It is more than just a trade association as it aims to be very practical.

One of its early achievements is the setting up of a secure mould storage area.

Land has been found and funding is in progress.

Another initiative is workforce pooling where staff are loaned between companies to cope with fluctuations in workload.

The Cluster has an impressive string of backers including the British Marine Federation (BMF), South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), Business Link Wessex, Trade Partners UK and the Manufacturing Advisory Service.

The cluster's administrative headquarters are in the offices of GRP Laminates in Cowes and the 58 members include South Boats, Harley Racing Yachts, Cheetah Marine, RHP Marine and Seaward Marine.
