Puffers star at Scottish Boat Show

The 2004 show, scheduled for August 13 - 15 at The Falkirk Wheel, will feature a newly built traditional puffer which will not only open the show, but will hopefully start a new trend in leisure boat design in Scotland, writes Mike Balmforth.

The boat has been designed by naval architect Simon Cormack and is currently under construction at Ardmaleish Boatbuilding Company on Bute.

She will be capable of coastal cruising, so don't be surprised if you see a half size (42ft) puffer in the Crinan or Caledonian Canal some day.

The show has also attracted another kind of puffer - this time it is Puffer Ale, which is brewed in Alloa and it will be on sale at The Scottish Boat Show's Real Ale Bar.

A good selection of exhibitors, including builders of canal cruisers and smaller traditional craft, inflatable boat suppliers and specialist retailers has booked space. The RYA will have a presence once again, introducing would-be boating enthusiasts to the pleasures of getting afloat and the benefits of organised training.

The organisers still have space for seagoing as well as inland craft and prime spots are available for power cruisers and sailing yachts up to 2m draft, which can step their masts for the show. Potential exhibitors can contact the organisers at Lowland Canals on 01324 671217.

Entry to the show will be £2.50 per adult with free admission for accompanied children under 15 years of age.

A donation of 50p from each ticket sale will go towards The Waterways Trust Scotland.
