Barge cures Walcon's pile problems

Walcon Marine has christened Walcon Wizard, a £500,000 24 metre piling barge, writes Iain Sutherland.

Managing director James Walters said: "This is a big, big step forward for us. We've been doing our own piling for some to complement our marina business and this should lead to a lot more work."

Our old barge wasn't selfpropelled and it was a lot older, he added, so this represents a major improvement. It's a rapid-response piling barge.

The new barge will be able to deliver pontoons for marinas and drive piles in a single operation.

She has a shallow draft and can handle single piles, harbour beacons, entrance buoys and breakwaters. The barge was completed in March and is based at Woolston.
