Better road signs for ExCeL
01 Aug 2004
In response to criticisms of the first show this year, Buchan told BB that more permanent signs would be evident to those arriving by road. "There are new signs on the A13 that will be up prior to January, " he told us, "and there will also be large number on the Aldgate gyratory. We also have proposals out for motorway signage at the intersection of the A13 and M25 and there will be signs at the M3/M25 interchange."
These are all permanent signs, he added.
But Red Ken is still very much anti-car, says Buchan. "The major destinations in Docklands are getting permanent signs, but Mr Livingstone still wants people to use public transport and not cars."
There will also be two new hotels by the time we get there in January. "The new Novotel next to the Ibis is now open and there's a new 5-star Marriott on Canary Wharf, " said Buchan.
Canary Wharf also has some new restaurants.
The attendance target for the 2005 show is 200,000, said Paul Streeter, managing director of SLIBS organisers, National Boat Shows (NBS).
This is in spite of a reduced promotions budget.
"We're spending slightly less because there's a reduced contribution from ExCeL, " he told BB. "This was always on the cards because we spent extra in the first year."
