'Fractional sailing' comes to UK
01 Aug 2004
SailTime of Hamble, a branch of a company operating throughout the United States, is offering "fractional sailing" for £395 a month, before VAT, writes Iain Sutherland.
The idea is to attract sailors who might otherwise own or charter. Members are assigned a new Beneteau 323, which they share with up to eight other people.
The monthly fee, together with a £1,500 deposit of which £500 is non-refundable and a £1,000 initiation and training fee, covers all costs with SailTime staff taking care of the marina, insurance and running expenses.
Members get seven sailing days a month with slots swappable among the eight sharing a boat.
SailTime's Jonathan Duffy said: "It is extremely popular in North America and I believe we will enjoy the same level of success here."
