Imray's centenary party
01 Aug 2004
The nautical cartographers and publishers actually have a history going back much more than 100 years: 1904 was merely the year the two long established firms of James Imray and Son and Norie and Wilson amalgamated to form the modern company whose name is as familiar to seamen as the sea areas in the shipping forecast.
The party at RSA included many of Imray's well known maritime scribes and authors of pilotage information including Tom Cunliffe, Rod Heikell, Don Street and Brian Navin. The yachting press was well represented and so too the Cruising Association, reflecting the successful collaboration between CA and Imrays in publishing the Cruising Almanac.
It was also essentially a family affair. The three current directors, Mrs E Wilson, managing director Willie Wilson and Ian Rippington, commercial director are very much of the dynasty - Rippington's mother was an Imray. Also present were Louisa Seymour, chart production manager, and cartographer Alan Wilkinson, longest serving member of Imray's 24 staff.
