Rope connection device from Tylaska
01 Aug 2004
The Spool Shackle is made in Aerospace 7000 series aluminium to satisfy the needs of the performance boat market. However a range of plastic variants, suitable for power and sail boats from dinghies to super yachts, is being developed that will enable this special connector to be used from everything from fender ties to rope connectors for use with rope from 2mm up to 16mm.
The shackles are currently being used by a number of Olympic yachtsmen, Farr 40's, IMS and ILC yachts.
The company says the shackle has an excellent strength to weight ratio and the key to this is that the line itself supplies the strength while the shackle redirects the force. The ease of unfastening after loading is based on the concept of breaking the back of a bowline knot, after which the line can be rolled back and taken off even after it becomes as "stiff as a wire" from tension.
The Tylaska Spool Shackle works with both conventional and high tech lines. All that is needed is a looped end. This can be either a pre-spliced end or a yet-to-be-spliced loop, or even just an overhand knot loop.
