Distribution

A good year for most Distribution

As we closed for press on this issue it was announced that Bainbridge and Aqua Marine were to merge. The deal is scheduled to be completed on or around December 6 and we understand both companies retain their names and identities.

They are shown as separate entities here - see our January news pages for the full story.

This feature is designed to bring you up to date with the changes to the various product portfolios on offer from the UK's distributors. It seems distribution is a growing market sector and this year's feature is a lot bigger than last year's. We have tried to get details from every distributor on our database, but some didn't reply in time, so may not appear here.

Advance Yacht Systems is a brand new distributor working out of Saxon Wharf and set up by Rod Boreham - ex-Fischer Panda - and Caroline Oldham.

The company is already handling Paguro Generators manufactured by Volpi Tecno Energia of Italy. The range starts with the Farymannpowered Compact 3000 3kVA model and goes up to the Lombardini powered 21kVA unit featuring Full Overhead Control System.

Dessalator Watermakers from France are new to the UK.

Dessalator was established over 30 years ago and its watermakers have been the factory fitted option on Beneteau and Amel yachts for many years.

Mermaid Marine Air Conditioning from the USA - also new to the UK - offers a range that includes compact, selfcontained air conditioning units from 4,300 - 16,500 BTU, a compact dehumidifier and a small self-contained icemaker capable of 10kg a day; all in stainless steel.

Exit Engineering manufactures carbon fibre deck gear including passarelles, spinnaker poles and a DAME-nominated steering wheel.

Advance Yacht Systems T: 023 8033 7722. F: 023 8033 7622 E: info@advanceyacht.co.uk W: advanceyacht.co.uk Aqua Marine has added six new ranges for 2005 so far.

These include the Lenco trim tab systems, the Ring cyba lite LED torches, the Hydraulic Steering Systems for outboards from Hydro Drive. Also five new ranges of deep cycle batteries, sealed for life, absorbed glass mat and gel under the Trojan, Fullriver and Squadron names. Also gauged fire extinguishers from 1kg to 4kg including expanding the company's range of HFC automatic fire extinguishers.

And a new range of engine controls from Teleflex Marine.

As predicted by Ivan Steele there has been only marginal growth in 2004. Aqua Marine believes this has been down to poor weather in July and August and the inevitable increase in interest rates.

However, he told BB the OEM sector is still strong, even with general commodities such as steel, lead and copper increasing dramatically in price.

Aqua Marine T: 02380 694949. F: 02380 601188 E: sales@aqua-marine.co.uk W: aqua-marine.co.uk AquaFax tell us it has had another good year with a sales increase of over 16%, and expects a similar story next year. Victron Inverters, and the Ring economy range, have been successful new products in 2004 together with new hydraulic steering from Ultraflex.

Next year the company will add outboard fuel tanks, aluminium anodes and a larger and updated range of electric bow thrusters from BCS.

In the Spring of 2005 Aquafax says it will also be opening a new depot in Plymouth in addition to the enlarged branches at Hamble and Wroxham this year.

Aquafax T: 01582 568700. F: 01582 568720 E: sales@aquafax.co.uk W: aquafax.co.uk ASAP has added SeaFlow Products, which include Lloyds Approved marine exhaust hose and a wide range of delivery hoses to suit, diesel, petrol, sanitation, air, water and fuel oils. The Exhaustguard exhaust alarm systems and ASAP's own range of fenders have been removed from the product range.

Peter Edwards says overall the last year has seen improved growth in sales.

ASAP Supplies T: 01502 716993. F: 01502 711680 E: email@asap-supplies.com W: asap-supplies.com Atlantis Marine Power has been selling the Kohler range during the last year and has been selling Dynamica's new 5kW 3000 rpm generator. They feel that "together this gives Atlantis Marine the most complete range of generators available to the marketplace".

In addition a range of new engine control heads from Mathers has been introduced.

Peter Middleton told BB that: "Business this year has been steady but hard fought.

Results are on a par with the previous year, but we see boatbuilders becoming more and more demanding of the products they buy from us and we have to strive harder to match the product from the factory to what the boat builder requires."

Atlantis Marine Power T: 01752 28810. F: 01752 208811 E: sales@atlantismarine.co.uk W: atlantismarine.co.uk Bainbridge has had two new full ranges and a number of new products in the Lewmar product line added to its portfolio. There are also a couple of additions in the FSERobline rope range and it is now possible to buy Bainbridge anchor chain in bulk.

The new ranges include Blue Performance - a range of high quality boat accessories and Yachtspeed alloy deck fittings.

Gordon Coventry, head of sales and marketing told us:

"Despite a relatively flat UK market and an indifferent boating season, Bainbridge has worked hard with retailers and customers to achieve increased sales year on year with both established brands and new products."

Bainbridge International T: 01489 776000. F: 01489 776005 E: info@bainbridgeint.co.uk W: bainbridgeint.com Bamar UK Distribution has found the RollGen, the roller reefing for MP-S and asymmetric spinnakers the best seller over the last year.

The product was launched at METS in 2003 and came on line to distributors in April of this year and really has sold well in the last three to four months.

Business would seem to be doing well as shown by the fact that last year's catalogue is already having to be reprinted for the second edition.

Bamar UK T: 01590 642777. F: 01590 642778 E: uk@bamar.co.uk W: channonsails.com EP Barrus launched the Verado four stroke this year. Calibra Marine International T: 023 8040 3944. F: 023 8040 4509 W: calibaramarine.com Cleghorn Waring's marine product sales have risen this year, led by strong home market sales of Jabsco and other bronze seawater pumps and spares, as well as their own and Jabsco's pressurised water pumps and systems. Exporting, both to the EU and further afield, has been tough this year and they are not expecting next year to be any easier.

Cleghorn Waring T: 01462 480380. F: 01462 482422 E: mail@cleghorn.co.uk W: cleghorn.co.uk Curtis Marine started selling the Nawa range of stainless steel deck fittings after last year's METS and says these have proved very successful.

The only brand C-Quip are definitely dropping is Anaf fire extinguishers.

The company told us 2004 has been another excellent year for C-Quip. However the retail side of the business has shown less of an improvement and they expect 2005 to be a tough year in a very competitive market place.
