Paints And Coatings

Heavy duty corrosion protection

Of interest to steel boatbuilders and owners is Copon, a two-pack epoxy tar usually used by organisations such as Railtrack to coat its bridge structures.

Designed specifically to be applied to prepared steel - even under damp conditions - it offers a life expectancy of 20 years. Copon is prepared to offer a six-year guarantee for underwater use, but reckons it should last two or three times longer than that. The coating can even be applied to existing paint, as long as it's in good condition. The pain is designed to cope with "gingering" on the surface, but needs to be applied in conditions that give relative humidity below 80%.

Only one coat is needed, applied to a 250 to 500 micron thickness.

While the average narrowboat will not want antifouling over the top, this can be done, say Copon, after a day's hardening, then the application of a "tie-coat" to hold the antifouling.

Our picture shows Railtrack's Kew Bridge, that's coated with Copon to keep it corrosion-free.
