Cuan Sound not viable

The potential threat to boating businesses that might have been caused by restricting navigation through Cuan Sound, on Scotland's West Coast, has receded with the publication of a report by consultants Babtie, writes Mike Balmforth .

They have concluded that a tidal power generator, built in association with a fixed link, would not produce sufficient energy to contribute to the cost of a fixed link.

The proposal was therefore deemed to be not financially viable.

This leaves a tidal power research unit as a possibility for the fast flowing waters of the sound, but hopefully this would not be associated with a navigation obstruction.

However, despite wind power generation being "talked up" at present, there is no doubt that the potential of tidal stream generation is infinitely greater and more dependable.

We will see a lot more controversy about this in the future.
