Iridium gets more spectrum

Iridium Satellite LLC says the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has expanded its spectrum with access to an additional 3.1MHz "to meet the increasing demand for Iridium's satellite voice and data services".

"The FCC's willingness to expand the spectrum available to Iridium recognizes that our rapid and sustained growth has clearly outgrown our original spectrum allocation, " said Iridium CEO Carmen Lloyd.

The FCC had previously given Iridium temporary authority to operate in a segment of the band on an emergency basis, and this FCC action formalises this arrangement.

However, Iridium says the FCC has also issued a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (FNPRM) to examine the feasibility of granting Iridium access to a further 2.25MHz of spectrum as the company continues to grow.

Iridium claims to be the only provider of global satellite voice and data communications with coverage of airways, oceans and Polar regions.

Iridium uses a constellation of 66 low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellites operated by The Boeing Company. PN
