Boating has a great day out at Goodwood
01 Jun 2004
The main difference between this year and last year was the number of marine trade people in attendance.
While last year seemed to have rather more boat owners and clients attending, this year's event seemed to be very much more a marine trade event.
And the weather helped.
Last year was cold and wet.
This year the weather remained dry and sunny - until the last race when the rain began. It then developed into a torrential downpour as people made their way home from the course.
Some 1100 or so marine industry members and guests attended - almost a fourfold increase in numbers over the 2003 event. And if many followed the tipster Anthony Kemp, they may well have come away with more money than they arrived with.
One of the day's more serious functions was to raise money for The Army Benevolent Fund, The Meningitis Research Foundation and St Wilfrid's Hospice. The sealed bid auction for the replica World Cup Rugby ball, signed by Phil Vickery and Andy Gomersall was won by Sunseeker Sales London and the pair of Goodwood metal members badges went to BMF treasurer, Geoff Warde MBE.
Over £10,000 will be shared by the three charities, which admitted to being "absolutely delighted" with the efforts of BMF members.
The evening before the event, His Grace, the Duke of Richmond entertained race sponsor companies to a lavish supper at Goodwood House.
Among the guests at Goodwood was Mrs Pauline Prestcott, wife of the deputy prime minister, who presented prizes to the jockey, trainer and owner of the winning horse in the Peters plcsponsored race.
The event will be staged again in 2005 and Peters plc is hoping for an attendance target of 2000 from the industry. Three companies have already reserved race sponsorship.
