Company 'could be viable'

For the second time in 18 months, a planning inspector has ruled that Sandbanks Yacht Company and the associated boat yard in Panorama Road, Poole, nicknamed Millionaires' Row, is vital to the tourism of the area and could be made viable, writes Iain Sutherland.

He rejected plans for luxury housing development submitted by Lambourne Developments Ltd, although he conceded that the sky-high property prices on the peninsular worked against the boat yard, which closed last year.

But he added that the planning system was intended to protect public facilities and amenities against the pressures of lucrative redevelopment and raised the idea of the council using its compulsory purchase powers to buy the site.
