Orkney attracts cruising boats
01 Jun 2004
Orkney Islands Council officially opened two of their three new marinas, conclud-ing the first phase of developments aimed at attracting cruising yachts to visit this fascinating island group, writes Mike Balmforth.
The completed facilities at Stromness
The completed new facilities are at Stromness, the main southern port, and at Westray, the most north westerly island in the archipelago. In the islands capital, Kirkwall, the pontoon berths are in operation, but not in their final location pending further work on the breakwater.
The 150 fully serviced berths in the three locations include specific visitor berths and operations are run by newly formed Orkney Marinas Ltd, with marketing of the new facilities is being jointly handled by them and VisitOrkney, the islands' tourist board, which is enthusiastic about the potential of this new market.
