Tight studs in tight places

Tensioning M48 studs on keel plates without damaging the Kevlar/carbon fibre honeycomb structure, even in situations of difficult access, is the challenge now being overcome in Australia by using Hytorc's clamp nuts and hydraulic tools.

The clamp nuts are made from AISI 422 stainless steel and the washers, made with a slightly larger diameter, distribute the tensioning load very evenly avoiding point loading on the surrounding materials.

In this deployment the calculated target bolt load is 119,116lbs. Hytorc says if access restrictions mean traditional hydraulic tensioners could not be used, their more compact and accurate clamp nut system employs all the benefits and dispenses with all the drawbacks of traditional torque and tensioning systems.

The Hytorc M48 clamps and T-200 tools have been used with success on the $A6+ million, 87foot Morning Glory maxi race yacht being built for a German client by McConaghy Pty Ltd, of Mona Vale, NSW, Australia, to a Reichel Pugh design.

Hytorc says its newgeneration Avanti tools (which are succeeding the T range) will be used on boats to be built in the near future in the USA, New Zealand and elsewhere.

The tools are proven to be completely accurate in alignment, says Hytorc, negating the risk of equipment and seal damage, with reaction arm free operation and minimal set-up times, they offer operators efficient, accident-free and very cost-effective handling in often extremely difficult access situations.
