01 Mar 2004
The yard is being sold because Brian Pope, who served his apprenticeship at the yard in the 1960's, is retiring.
The yard, which occupies a site of just under half an acre and has some 6,150 sq ft of workshops, offices and storage facilities in two main buildings.
The main workshop is new and has a covered area of some 5,000 sq ft.
There's, another 550 feet of overall foreshore frontage to Penpol Creek at Feock plus a substantial area of fundus with pontoons.
The business is currently trading as The Ocean Yacht Company Limited and restores and builds classic and traditional yachts and offers lay-up facilities for private and some commercial vessels.
According to the agents, Scott Burridge Chick Leisure, there is also a new boat building service with moulds for the company's Harriet Launch, a classic 1930's design day launch. There are also moulds for Thames Slipper launches.
The yard has a marina with 16 berths and space for laying up about 100 boats, as well as rented and mooring servicing and launching facilities. The mooring business is available by way of separate negotiation.
"This is an opportunity to acquire an historic and busy boatyard with a fine reputation, " says Jeremy Beeching of Scott Burridge Chick Leisure. "There is scope for further development and an opportunity to build on the basis created by the owner for the last 10 years."
According to Beeching, the business has several years of work ahead of it.
