Suzuki beats size = weight barrier

The more powerful outboard motors become the larger and heavier they are until, says Suzuki, it rewrote the rule book with its new V6 4-stroke range.

Suzuki engineers were set the task of producing a motor smaller and lighter than other 4-strokes, without losing power and performance. They produced a motor specially designed for marine use which meets these criteria in full and which is the lightest in the V6 category.

Applying new thinking the team abandoned the conventional 60 degree cylinder bank angle used in other motors and adopted an all new 55 degree layout whilst maintaining a balanced 60 degree crank - an industry first.

Narrowing the angle of the V automatically creates a motor which is slimmer, more compact than comparable 4-strokes. This makes it easier to install and creates more room and better motor manoeuvrability on the transom - very important when rigging today's boats, particularly in twin installations.

Also, at 55 degrees everything can be smaller and more compact, therefore, saving weight.

The overall compact size of the new V6 has been achieved by combining the 55 degree cylinder bank with Suzuki's offset driveshaft system which positions the crankshaft in front of the driveshaft connecting them with intermediate reduction gearing. This enables the power head to be moved forward closer to the centre of gravity and a mixed gear/chain cam drive system with smaller camshaft sprockets to be used - making the cylinder head and cover more compact. The result, not only a reduction in the motor's profile on the transom, but less vibration, improved weight distribution, balance and directional stability.

The top of the range 250hp DF250 is the World's most powerful V6 4-stroke and has already won Suzuki the prestigious American National Marine Manufacturers Association (NNMA) Innovation Award for technological breakthrough.

Each of the three V6 models200,225 and 250hp have the same engine and transmission with the different power ratings being achieved by additional performance features and engine mapping.
