Ms Alison Grosse, mayor of Maroochy Shire, officially opened the new centre, called UKSA Australia, on February 18, 2004.

Joining in the celebrations were David Green, a director of UKSA, with Nick Moloney, the Australian professional sailor who has been appointed UKSA Australia ambassador.

Other local dignitaries and VIP's were present, including British deputy consul-general Caroline Saunders and Craig Humphrey, director of state development on the Sunshine Coast.

The Oz connection replaces the UKSO's previous warm weather facility in Barbados.
