Two drown in Suffolk Yacht Harbour

The boating community in East Anglia was saddened by the deaths of two respected yachtsmen at Suffolk Yacht Harbour, Levington Marina on the River Orwell, writes Mark Wakelin . An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the deaths of Max Pennington and Captain Victor Sutton.

The two men had attended the Fitting Out Supper of the Haven Ports Yacht Club on board its former Lightship clubhouse moored in the marina. They were apparently returning to Pennington's yacht Genoa when the tragedy occurred, although the circumstances remain unclear.

The police were notified that they were missing around 6.00am the following morning and both bodies were recovered from the marina.

Both men were highly experienced yachtsmen. Pennington (73) of Trowse, near Norwich, had owned a series of boats and had cruised widely. He was a member of the Cruising Association. Captain Sutton (75) was formerly harbourmaster and chief executive of the Harwich Harbour Authority.

Jonathan Dyke of Suffolk Yacht Harbour told Boating Business : "This is a tragedy and we remain at a loss to know exactly what happened. Both gentlemen were long term and valued customers at the marina and indeed we used to deal with Captain Sutton professionally when he was with the Haven Authority. One cannot imagine two more responsible and experienced people which makes the accident even more difficult to understand."
