Yarmouth marina a step closer

At last Great Yarmouth looks likely to have a modern marina writes Mark Wakelin.

Mike Goulby, who has operated Bure Marine at Cobholm for many years, is leading a £50 million project to develop the 22 acres of derelict land between his yard and the nearby Breydon Bridge. He hopes to build a mixed marina and residential development with a five acre locked mooring basin capable of berthing around 150 boats and approximately 400 properties.

The scheme also includes extensive pontoon berthing on the main river frontage of the site and also desperately needed safe waiting berths seaward of Haven Bridge.

The proposal has been floated before, but Gouldby is delighted that at last he is receiving real support from the Great Yarmouth Borough Council, which owns much of the land, and also from the port authority which, in the past, has been rather lukewarm about boating developments in its harbour. Local MP Tony Wright is also backing the proposal.

"Our local council has seen what a positive effect waterside developments such as this can have in former industrial areas and have realised that Yarmouth can really benefit, " said Gouldby.

"I'm greatly encouraged by the enthusiasm now being shown and I'm confident the scheme will go ahead."

And the project has a good Norfolk feel to it: partners including local consulting engineers Fordham Johns and contractors John Martin Construction, specialists in marine civil engineering and piling.

Much of the infrastructure for boatyard services is already in place: Gouldby has recently installed a new 25 ton boat hoist to complement the existing crane and slipway and rebuilt the big boatshed.

Also nearing completion is a new three storey building that will house offices, reception and chandlery.
