Low voltage battery monitor
01 Sep 2004
Originally developed for the Manchester Fire Brigade, which found it impracticable to keep its vehicle batteries on constant charge, the LVPM now gives each shift just four LEDs to check at the start of the shift. If a light is on, they simply charge the battery.
The first LVPM option to warn of low voltage is a visual or audible alarm that triggers when the battery voltage falls below a pre-set threshold. The audible alarm can be set to talk to the operator to warn them of the problem.
The second option offers 520amp relays that will switch of pre-selected equipment when the battery runs below a certain level. So a radio could be switched off first, followed by the interior lights and so on.
The most comprehensive option allows partial or complete battery isolation, leaving enough power in the batteries to start the engine. Essential equipment can remain in operation if required and the batteries can be isolated immediately before leaving the boat if it's going to be left standing for a while.
