Your Letters British Waterways

Dear Sir, I read with open mouthed astonishment Mr Froomberg's statement (BB March 2005) that "BW is determined to support the continuing expansion of boating on our waterways, and to facilitate a thriving marina industry upon which that depends".

Our lease expired two years ago and the first contact we had from BW was April last year.

Since proceedings for renewal can start up to 6 months before the termination, we were disappointed, but happy to expedite matters.

The new lease was engrossed this year for a very short term, which makes it very difficult when trying to raise money for investing. Longer terms are apparently not "policy". Why?

BW farmed out the legal work to the amusingly named Wright Hassell of Leamington Spa. This firm was not only slow and incompetent, but has seriously damaged us financially. We had to go to Court several times to preserve our rights. Bear in mind that this renewal should have been basically the old lease with different dates.

We are, of course, expecting BW to foot an appreciable amount of the eventual costs, (if not all) and we will be seeking compensation for BW's lack of control over its subcontractors.

Even if our experience is atypical, the contempt with which BW has treated us is quite appalling. We are not looking for sympathy, but wonder what the answer would be if BW asked itself "Would Scottish & Newcastle, or West Ferry be treated like this?"

Yours faithfully, Name & address withheld
