Pre-1998 lifejackets warning

Chandlers selling Barbour, Cosalt, Crewsaver, Douglas Gill, Fox, Leeda, Musto or Markin brand lifejackets made before 1998 with a United Moulders Mk3 automatic operating head - see picture - are warned problems can occur over time with this unit.

The affected operating head is pale blue in colour. Operating heads other than pale blue require no further action.

Crewsaver has issued a warning to consumers that repeated over-tightening of the CO2 gas cylinder into a pale blue operating head may cause wear in the moulding. They warn gas could escape when the jacket is inflated.

According to Crewsaver, the remedy is simple and requires only removal of the gas cylinder and checking the operating head has an 'O' ring seal. If it has, there's no problem.

If there is no 'O' ring seal, Crewsaver will supply them free of charge. Fitting the 'O' ring is a simple operation - just put it in and tamp it in place, then screw the gas cylinder back in. The jackets do not have to be returned to the manufacturers.
