Up the creek without a paddle

If Wallace & Gromit went boating this might be how they'd go about it, writes Dave Selby. No sails, no prop, instead the "driver" reaches ahead with his digger arm, plunges his bucket into the seabed then pulls his whole ensemble along in a monstrous lurch - a bit like mechanical punting on steroids.

This scene was captured at Brightlingsea, Essex, where the digger was working on a 140apartment marina development. Apparently, when it came to the end of his shift the driver couldn't be bothered to wait for his tow and decided to "dig in" to get home.

Harbour master Bernie Hetherington said: "They shouldn't be doing it and they've been told off several times already.

Apart from churning up chunks of the creek bed and creating a minor hazard to navigation, there are also bewildering possibilities for confusion under the collision regs."
