University launches yacht degree
01 Feb 2005
The BSc (Hons) Marine Studies in Ocean Yachting course has been designed in response to marine industry needs, says the University of Plymouth.
Graduates can look at career possibilities ranging from yacht and superyacht operations, to project management for new builds and refit. The course has been designed to cover the requirements of Maritime and Coastguard Agency-approved professional qualifications and will be taught by staff from the School of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Sciences.
It will utilise a state-of-the-art ship simulator capable of simulating a range of ship types ranging from large oil tankers to high-speed jet boats. In addition to simulator training, yacht students will undertake a period of training afloat, using 70 foot (21.3m) yachts provided by the Ocean Youth Trust.
