Rates hike will hit retail sector

All small firms need to be aware of the significant changes currently afoot to the rules governing the local taxation of small businesses, says John Davies, head of business law at the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Many readers will by now have received from the Inland Revenue's Valuation Office Agency (VOA) a notice setting out a new "summary valuation" for the properties they occupy.

The news last month that the Marine Trade Show (MTS) had been "put on hold" came as a total surprise to us here at BB. We thought this year's show was a good one.

Dear Sir, As a retailer my staff and I found this year's show a major success in that there were more wholesalers and manufacturers than in previous years. As the attendance was down it was very easy to visit a stand and chat with the correct person.

Dear Sir, "Marine Trade Show on hold" and you have invited comments. My business has been involved in the supply of glassfibre materials to chandlers for some 20 years. Your article states (para. 3) - "Currently targeted at the retail sector, it seems impossible for the organisers to get retailers to visit the show, and play a part in the development of the industry they rely upon so heavily for their livelihood." Naughty naughty retailers.
