With 1300 votes cast, Bisham Abbey - based on the River Thames near Marlow - beat off competition from Silver Award winner Empress Holidays on the Shropshire Union Canal and Bronze Award winner Alvechurch Boat Centre on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal.

The awards are open to all enterprises based on or by Britain's rivers, canals and lakes, and celebrate the waterside businesses from pubs, restaurants and shops to museums, boat hire companies and sailing schools that encourage people to visit and enjoy Britain's inland waterways.

"We are delighted with the number of people who have voted to help us celebrate excellence on the waterways in this second year of the Waterscape. com Waterside Business Awards, " said Simon Parker, managing director of Waterscape. com.

"Last year we were thrilled to be awarded the Waterscape Silver Award, " said Roy May, Bisham Abbey's principal.

"This year we are delighted to have received the Gold Award for the Best Boating Business and we would like to thank all of our clients who took the time to vote for us."
