Cowes 'insults' festival
01 Jan 2005
The Isle of Wight Council's offer to contribute just £500 towards the Cowes Classic powerboat festival has been described as "insulting" by Lord Beaverbrook, writes Iain Sutherland.
Lord Beaverbrook, chairman of the British Powerboat Racing Club, talked of getting £100,000 from Torquay, whose council spokesman denied having that sort of money.
Said Lord Beaverbrook of the £500 offer: "I thought they'd left a couple of noughts out. £500 is unlikely to keep the event in Cowes."
