Dixon steps down, but 'might dabble'
01 Jan 2005
And while he feels perhaps he ought to retire completely, he admitted to BB that he "might dabble a bit" if anyone wanted his advice on acquisitions and mergers - that sort of thing Much of his work has been helping the industry through the trade federation and its associated associations.
He became chairman of the Association of Marine Trades, the forerunner of the MTA, in 1959. He has also served the main federation in many roles under its various guises. He was general manager of the Ship and Boat Builders National Federation (SBBNF).
He was the man who started focusing the federation's attention on exports; he was the man responsible for the carpeting at Earls Court and the man who pushed the federation into buying the Southampton Boat Show.
Dixon was also the man who started the marine trade show rolling.
Of the decision to put the show on hold, he reckoned for a country that has a marine industry that's some 25% of the entire European market not to have its own trade show seems to be quite wrong.
Our picture shows Dixon receiving the Peter Millward Memorial Award from MTA chairman Peter Methven. The award is given annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to British Marine Federation associations.
BBreckons Dixon made a more than significant contribution to the entire industry.
