Irish leisure marine set to grow

Speaking at the launch of the 2005 Irish International Boat Show (IIBS), David O'Brien, chairman of the Irish Marine Federation (IMF) said the marine leisure sector is set to grow by 30% over the next three years and called on government and local authorities to help by unlocking the potential in Irish waters.

"Ireland has largely turned her back on the sea despite being an island nation and has not recognised the true value of the marine environment for leisure purposes, " said O'Brien.

"This country has one of the lowest ratios of boat ownership in Europe but this could change if the government and local authorities open access for the general public to the sea and provide the facilities, such as marinas, that residents in other European countries take for granted."

Growth can be achieved by even a small number of capital projects in the correct locations, he added. Far from being a drain on public resources, they can be sustainable assets creating employment and local wealth.

"Even if nothing is done in Ireland, " he insisted, "the Welsh will be doubling the number of marina berths in North Wales to 5,000 over the next three years."

Close to 200 exhibitors are expected to fill the Simmonscourt Pavilions of the Royal Dublin Society for the IIBS show from February 23 to 27 2005.

The show will include all the latest boats and equipment to appeal to all branches of the marine leisure family. From dinghies, RIBS, angling boats, sailing and power cruisers, diving equipment, water skiing, electronics, clothing and chandlery, there promises to be something for everyone at the show. There will be more boats and more features than ever before in an event designed to appeal to the boat buyer and boat user of all ages and pockets.

The show expects to draw crowds in excess of 25,000 from across Ireland and also from Wales and the North of England.

The Irish Marine Federation has appointed Expo Exhibitions, Ireland's largest exhibition organiser, to manage and operate the event on its behalf.
