9-litre engine still going strong

Scania says market demands means its 9-litre marine engine will stay in production well into 2007.

The 9-litre marine engine has been in production since the mid-1980s and, says Scania, is one of the most tried and tested marine units.

The engine has undergone continuous development ever since its introduction and now has a number of technical features that interact to deliver excellent total economy.

All fuel supply takes place on the engine's "cold" side, which promotes a uniform, smoothly flowing feed of the air/fuel mixture and results in lower fuel consumption and cleaner exhaust emissions.

Equipped with a charge air cooler, the engine complies with the IMO norms.

Scania says another important feature is its unique oil cleaning system with a combination of a centrifugal filter and a paper filter cartridge, which means the engine and turbocharger are subjected to less wear, fewer oil changes are required and uptime between overhauls is longer.

The 9-litre marine engine is a 6-in-line, 4-stroke diesel engine with direct injection.

The output range is 155 kW (210hp) - 331 kW (450hp). It is also available as an auxiliary engine with an output of 135218 kW at 50 Hz and 155-234 kW at 60 Hz.
